Special Weather Statement issued for southern regions of the province by Environment Canada.

Late season thunderstorm potential with very strong wind gusts and locally heavy downpours Where: Fraser Canyon, North and South Thompson, Nicola Valley, Similkameen, Okanagan Valley, Shuswap, Columbias, Kootenays, Yellowhead When: Wednesday. Wednesday night for areas east of Golden and Creston towards the Alberta border. Hazards: – Very strong wind gusts leading to potential broken tree limbs and power outages – Motorists are advised of potential strong crosswinds over high elevation highway passes susceptible to crosswinds – Potential thunderstorms with repeated heavy downpours leading to locally heavy rainfall totals, localized flooding or water pooling on roads – There is a heightened risk of debris flows over areas impacted by burn scars Remarks: A vigorous cold front will cross the province on Wednesday bringing with it very strong winds aloft and an unstable airmass that is ripe for the development of strong wind gusts, heavy showers and potentially thunderstorms. Any thunderstorms that do develop will likely form a line resulting in the potential for repeated heavy downpours from multiple thunderstorms over the same area resulting in locally heavy rainfall totals. Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur High winds may result in power outages, and fallen tree branches Motorists, especially in high profile vehicles, may expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong cross winds Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Environment Canada has also issued a Wind Warning for exposed coastal section of North Vancouver Island, the Central Coast and Haida Gwaii.

“Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring. An intense low pressure system (the remnants of Typhoon Pulasan) will bring strong winds to the BC Coast on Thursday. Maximum winds: 90 km/h gusting to 120 km/h. When: late in the day on Thursday. Remarks: A deep low pressure system will cross the BC offshore waters on Thursday, reaching the coast overnight and then proceeding to track inland during the day on Friday. Very strong, gusty southeasterly winds will develop on Thursday afternoon and continue into the evening. Winds will weaken as the low passes near midnight, then there will be a brief shot of intense northwesterly winds in the wake of the low. Winds will diminish through the day on Friday as the low moves away from the region.”

ALBERTA

Wind Warning in effect for Jasper and regions south of to US border.

ECC advises – Strong winds from the west with gusts up to 100 km/h are expected to develop by this afternoon. The strongest winds are more likely to occur overnight tonight. Winds will weaken by Thursday morning. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.”
